At the global action day July 5th there was a rallye in Klagenfurt (Austria) giving out information to the people in the centre of the city. A small exhibition explained history of social protest in Japan and resitance against G8. In the evening films were screened about global agriculture, G8 and migration. There was demonstration Lindau/ Bodensee to support protests in Japan. 60 people (which was estimated as much, organizers awaited some 40) demonstrated 2 hours. Yesterday, Monday 7th there was a film screening at New Yorck/ Bethanien about history of social protests in Japan and current anti-G8 protest. Latest info was given and some discussions about the role of the radical left in Japan since 40 years. There was a bar running also collecting some money for japanese resistance.

Globalisation has created huge movements of people, however, only those deemed worthy under the eyes of the capitalist state find it easy to settle in their country of choice. For the poor and vulnerable freedom of movement is severely restricted. Rich nations, like those within the G8, abhor those who cannot bring further wealth into the capitalist economy. The poor and vulnerable who dare try and seek a better life are often treated no better than dogs. And they soon discover that a tin of baked beans are bestowed more rights to enter a country than themselves. No Nations, No Borders, No G8!

Following the International Day of Action against G8 organised by No G8 Action Japan, Dissent held an autonomous demonstration in front of the Asiatic entry of the Lafayette Galeries during the summer rebate period as the Japan is actually hosting the 2008 G8 Summit. We distributed texts in French and in Japanese and pulled out a bilingual banner declaring « Stop G8. The World Is Not For Sale ».
This demonstration was part of an anti-consumerism struggle as consumerism is the very basis of the capitalistic system. A tool for controling people (we consume thus we exist), and mainly responsible for the mass destruction of our natural ressources.
« Work, Consume and Die », this is the lifestyle they are offering us…
In Japan, as in many other places in the world, the resistance is growing in spite of the repression trying to shut us up.
This action was also in solidarity with our japanese comrades arrested on the 10th June to prevent them from organising the contestation against G8 and as well with our italian comrades awaiting justice for the Bolzaneto story (Genoa, G8 2001) where many G8 activists were tortured.

On the eve of the 2008 G8 Summit, thousands took to the streets of Sapporo, Japan, today to call for an end to the undemocratic policy-making and wars of G8 member states. The protest, which was a coalition effort of NGOs, trade unions, leftist organizations, anti-authoritarian organizers, and independent activists, culminated in the arrest of three protesters and a Reuters photographer.
“The rally today illustrated both the powerful global justice movement underway in Japan and worldwide, and the police repression that grassroots activists face,” said David Solnit, a US activist. “People are realizing that the G8 claims to be a force against hunger, poverty, and climate change, yet with each meeting, they only institute policies that perpetuate these things – “aid” packages that trap poor countries into debt, fossil fuel-based energy systems that create climate change, and war.”

SAPPORO, Japan (Reuters) – Several thousand people rallied on Saturday on the streets of central Sapporo, Japan, to protest against a Group of Eight summit due to start next week at a luxury hotel a two-hour drive away.
Four Japanese men were arrested, said a police official on the northern island of Hokkaido, of which Sapporo is the capital. Two were arrested for violating the public safety ordinances and two others for interfering with police activities.
A Reuters cameraman was taken away by police but it was not immediately clear if he was among the four arrested.

Anti-G8 Solidarity Action in Singapore

Today is the 5th of July, International Day of Action Against the G8. In solidarity with the planned mass demonstration in Sapporo and anti-G8 activists worldwide, we held a brief protest outside the Japanese Embassy in Singapore. As we gathered outside the gate, we were met with hostile reception from the security guard on duty, who threatened to call the police if we did not leave immediately. Undeterred, we unfurled our banner and took pictures.
Later, when we asked to hand a collective letter to the Japanese ambassador, the guard refused to cooperate. We were also stopped from depositing the letter in the mailbox. One of us attempted to reason with guard but he would not listen. In the end, we had to leave without submitting the letter. We will try again on Monday.
The embassy must have been put on alert during the G8 summit, for the guard appeared to have anticipated our actions. He was probably told to refer anything peculiar to the police. Here, we lament the fact that demonstrations are relatively uncommon and risky in Singapore. Repressive laws require police approval for public gatherings of 4 or more people. These laws are selectively enforced and used to quell dissent.

This is how the benefit gig against G8 occured last Sunday night at the backstreets of Cubao in Metro Manila. The supposed dregs of society, stigmatised as incapable of upbringing a revolution, came together amidst the hot sweaty night to plot the resistance. A new way of resistance!
The benefit gig against G8 is entitled «Aklas Laban Sa G8 [Resistance Against g8]» and was organised by autonomous groups and individuals, namely NonCollective, AID, etc., based in Metro Manila.

In front of the Japanese Embassy in Berlin, Germany, a small demonstration of 40 people took place to send a message of solidarity to our friends and comrades in Japan. Even in the rain, we met to send a clear message that we think the G8 is more clearly a part of the problem, and not a solution to such issues as Climate Change or poverty in Africa. A number of speeches were read, also highlighting the massive recent repression in Japan against anti-G8 activists. In Berlin the Japanese Embassy is directly next to the Italian Embassy, so speeches were also made about the problem of state violence at the G8 in 2001, and about the coming verdicts against a large number of police who have been rightly accused of abuse of power and violence towards protesters.

This week has seen three days of protest against the G8, starting in Kyoto with two days of resistance to the Foreign ministers’ meeting and culminating today with the Tokyo day of action against the G8.
Today, roughly 500-700 people took part in a heavily policed march through the Shinjuku neighbourhood of central Tokyo. The police were heavy handed and outnumbered protesters at least 2 to 1. There were three types of police. Traffic police, who mitigated between the demo and pedestrians/traffic; riot police who surrounded the demo the whole time and flanked the whole length of the demo from start to finish, and the public service police who wandered around taking notes and pictures. Many more police were stationed nearby in vans and full riot gear, and two vans of riot police followed behind the demo.

The protests against the 2008 G8 summit have begun. On Thursday a demonstration took place in Kyoto against the G8 foreign ministers meeting. There are three protests camps in Sapporo, the nearest town to Lake Toya, where the G8 summit will take place from July 7-9. Alternative media centres in Sapporo and Tokyo have been set up and a network of critical lawyers is ready to support demonstrators. Events, conferences and demonstrations are scheduled for the coming week. Many activists from around the world have travelled to Japan, amongst them anarchist and trade union groups from other Asian countries.

Japanese Mobilization G8 2008
Everything is in full swing here in Tokyo. The atmophere is vibrant and the Japanese are very well organised, although there are far too few of them to get everyting done. For the Japanese activists it is nearly the first time ever to have an international protest. So any and all help from everywhere is greatly appreciated. Also it is still not too late to come to Japan! Everybody is looking forward to share experiences and get more international connections and networks.
Update on G8 repression and the riot situation in Kamagasaki

Over the past week and a half, an unprecedented political crackdown has been enacted in advance of a series of economic summits around the country. Despite this, the brave workers of Kamagasaki stood up against the stiff security environment in riots against the brutal beating of a day laborer over the past five days. The twin situations of repression and revolt deserve to be examined in more detail.
